Ariette Ceiling/Wall Lamp

Design

Ariette emerged from Tobia Scarpa’s exploration of materials and his desire to distill a design down to a few essential elements.

Its square shape defines a rigorous geometric presence, while the synthetic fabric introduces a softer, lighter quality. Once illuminated, the lamp sheds some of its physical substance, transforming into a diffused, glowing surface.

The contrast between geometry and lightness is one of the most recognizable features of the design—a piece that remains as relevant today as it was when first created in 1973.

Lighting and functionality

Ariette emits diffused light through its synthetic fabric, distributing it evenly and helping to create a soft, welcoming atmosphere.

The lamp can be installed:

- On a wall
- On a ceiling

This versatility expands design possibilities, allowing Ariette to function either as a large vertical luminous surface or as a decorative ceiling light.

The configuration accommodates four light sources with E27 bases (not included).

Materials and Construction

The structure is designed to maintain visual lightness and simplicity in its construction. Ariette consists of:

- A synthetic fabric diffuser
- A wall or ceiling mounting structure
- A polyamide frame
- Polyamide reinforced with 30% fiberglass

The use of fabric as a diffusing surface creates a soft, delicate light, while the technical structure remains visually discreet.

Ariette 1

The Ariette 1 version features more compact dimensions, making it ideal for spaces where you want to introduce a significant luminous surface without overwhelming the wall or ceiling.

Dimensions: 80 × 80 cm

It can be used individually or combined with multiple units to create a rhythmic pattern of light across an architectural surface.

Ariette 2

Ariette 2 amplifies the design’s presence through a larger, square-shaped surface.

Dimensions: 100 × 100 cm

Its more generous scale makes this version particularly well-suited for large walls, living areas, entryways, and spaces where the lamp is intended to serve a significant decorative function.

Created in 1973, Ariette reflects Tobia Scarpa’s interest in experimentation and the use of materials capable of transforming the perception of light.

The synthetic fabric serves more than just a technical purpose; it is a fundamental element of the lamp’s identity. Light passes through the surface, emphasizing its lightness—giving Ariette a different appearance depending on whether it is switched on or off.

The simplicity of the design has ensured its longevity, keeping it relevant even in contemporary interiors.

Versatility and adaptability

Because Ariette can be installed on either a wall or a ceiling, it is highly adaptable to a wide range of settings. It can be used in living rooms, bedrooms, entryways, and corridors, or as a large luminous surface in contract and hospitality settings.

The two available sizes allow for the selection of the scale best suited to the space, while the square shape also enables the creation of multiple-unit compositions for a more pronounced graphic effect.
